Which Wing Size Do I Need? A Practical Wing Foil Size Guide

Every week someone asks us: which wing size do I need? Here are the practical rules of thumb we actually use when advising customers, plus the honest caveat that your foil, your board and your skill shift the answer.

The two factors that matter most

Rider weight and wind strength dominate everything else. A bigger wing has more area, so it generates more power at a given wind speed. Heavier riders need more power to get flying, lighter riders need less. Everything else, board volume, foil size, water state, skill, nudges the answer up or down half a metre.

Rules of thumb that hold up

For a rider around 75 to 85 kg: light wind days call for the big sizes, roughly 6 metres and up. The classic mid-range that covers most European days sits around 4.5 to 5.5 metres. Strong wind shrinks the wing to 3.5 to 4 metres and below. Lighter riders shift the whole scale down about half a metre to a metre, heavier riders shift it up the same amount. Beginners should err bigger: early on you waste a lot of the wing's power, and a slightly bigger wing gets you riding instead of bobbing.

Think in quivers, not single wings

Nobody covers all conditions with one wing. The proven starting quiver is two wings roughly 1.5 metres apart, for example a 4.0 and a 5.5, which covers the majority of rideable days at most spots. A third wing at either end comes later, once you know whether your home spot leans light or windy. This is also why PPC's ranges run in half-metre steps: the Surge runs 2.8 to 5.8, the Blend 3.3 to 6.8, and the M1-L and M1-X from 3.0 up to 7.0.

What shifts the answer

A bigger foil lets you ride a smaller wing, it lifts earlier and needs less power. A bigger board gets you onto foil with less wing power too. Flat water needs less than choppy water. And lighter wings behave bigger than their size in marginal wind because you are not carrying the weight, one reason the Blend excels on light days.
