SUP Board Size Guide: Length, Width and Volume Explained
Three numbers describe every SUP: length, width and volume. Get them right for your weight and your paddling and any decent board feels good. Get them wrong and even an expensive board fights you. Here is what each number does and the ranges that work.
What the numbers do
Length is speed and tracking: longer boards glide further per stroke and hold a line. Width is stability: wider is steadier but slower. Volume is flotation: it decides how high you sit in the water and how forgiving the board feels. Volume is the number to get right first.
Volume rules of thumb
For all-round paddling: beginners want roughly twice their body weight in litres (80 kg rider, around 160L), improvers around 1.6 to 1.8 times, experienced paddlers can go lower. For SUP surfing the numbers drop: experienced wave riders often ride 1.2 to 1.4 times body weight. These are starting points, not laws: chop, cold water and carrying a dog or child all argue for more volume.
| Rider weight | All-round volume | Surf SUP volume |
|---|---|---|
| 60 to 70 kg | 120 to 150L | 85 to 110L |
| 70 to 85 kg | 145 to 175L | 100 to 130L |
| 85 to 100 kg | 165 to 200L | 115 to 150L |
Matching board to paddling
All-round cruising: a wide 10'6" to 11'6" shape like the Jimmy Lewis Cruise Control (160 to 200L), the original all-around board that most brands copied. Distance and racing: long and narrower, the Sidewinder in 12'6" or 14'0" with its zero drag outline. Waves: shorter with shaped rails, the Destroyer MP (100 to 160L) or the performance World Wide. Fun everywhere: the Maestro, the board our German test partners call a true funboard. Moving toward foiling: the Flying V, which needs a rigid platform by definition.
The honest footnote on inflatables
These numbers assume a rigid board. Inflatables measure volume generously but flex underfoot, so they paddle smaller than their number suggests. If you are choosing between the two, our hardboard vs inflatable comparison covers it honestly.
