How to Dock Start: Learning the Skill Step by Step

The dock start is the entry ticket to pump foiling: step from a dock onto a moving board, land on a flying foil, and keep it alive with your legs. It looks like a magic trick. It is actually a sequence of four small skills, and each one is learnable on its own. Here is how we break it down.

The setup

You need a dock or pontoon with deep water in front of it (mast length plus a safety margin), a compact board with enough deck to land on, and a foil with generous area and glide. Boards built for exactly this include the Jimmy Lewis Pumkin and the AM Kite and Pump Board, and compact prone shapes like the Superfly work well too. On the foil side, glide is everything: larger Cloud IX F-Series wings are a strong starting point, and a stiff full carbon setup matters more here than anywhere else because flex eats pump energy.

Step 1: the placement

Lay the board on the water parallel to the dock, front foot area level with you. Your back foot will land over the mast, your front foot further forward than feels natural. Look at the nose, not your feet.

Step 2: the step-on

Two or three quick steps along the dock, then step (not jump) onto the board with your weight slightly forward, pushing the board into motion. Speed at this moment is what the foil converts into lift, so commit. Hesitant step-ons sink; confident ones fly.

Step 3: the first three pumps

The first pump happens immediately: unweight, let the foil rise, then push forward and down through the front foot. The first three pumps decide the whole ride. Make them big and slow rather than fast and shallow, the foil needs time to turn each pump into glide.

Step 4: the rhythm

Once flying, settle into a cadence and chase duration, not distance. Ten controlled seconds beat fifty chaotic metres. When the foil slows, pump bigger, not faster.

Drills that actually help

Practise the step-on landing on the grass first. Film yourself from the side, the gap between what you feel and what you do is usually the fix. And expect a wet first week, every pump foiler on earth had one. Questions about board volume or foil size for your weight? Ask us, or grab a one-off setup from Demo and Used Gear to learn on.
