Buying Used Wings, Boards and Foils: What to Check Before You Pay
Foil gear holds up well and progresses fast, which makes the used market the smartest money in the sport: last season's wing at half price flies almost identically. But a few specific faults turn a bargain into a bin. Here is the checklist we use on our own demo gear, so you can use it on anyone's.
Used wings: the three checks
First, pressure: inflate to full pressure and leave it for an hour. A wing that softens has a bladder or valve issue. Bladders are replaceable (we stock replacement bladders for PPC race wings, and most brands sell them), but price the repair into the deal. Second, the canopy: crisp is good, crinkly is fine, soft and stretchy is a wing past its best, it will feel vague and slow no matter the size. Third, the details: trailing edge fraying, handle attachment points, window creasing and repairs. A professionally taped repair is fine; a peeling home job is a warning.
Used boards: knock and look
Look for dings that have taken water (brown staining around a crack is the tell). Tap the deck and bottom with a knuckle: a dull dead sound where the rest is bright can mean delamination. Check the foil boxes hardest of all, they carry the biggest loads on the board: cracks radiating from the boxes are the expensive fault. Straps, vents and inserts are cheap to fix and fair to negotiate on.
Used foils: stiffness is the product
Check every connection for play: wing to fuselage, fuselage to mast, mast to board. A worn connection that rocks even slightly ruins the ride and often cannot be fixed cheaply. Look for impact damage on the leading edges of the wings (small chips are cosmetic, cracks or flat spots are not), corrosion on hardware, and stripped screw heads that hint at over-tightening. Full carbon gear survives well when cared for, which is exactly why we sell it.
Private sale vs checked demo gear
A good private deal beats everything on price, if you can inspect in person and know what you are looking at. The alternative is demo gear from a shop: our Demo and Used Gear collection is one-off wings, boards and foils from our demo events, each checked against exactly the list above, sold with an invoice, and shipped from our European warehouses, with wings from 280 euros. You pay a little more than the classifieds and skip every risk on this page.
